Many people, from Burlington, to the GTA, from Ontario and across the world, search out secrets to SEO – they want to be big SEO stars,get websites ranked and be praised for their work.

Well as I’ve told a few people, SEO is no secret – there are no secrets to SEO but there are 4 skills you need and they are as follows:

technical skills and capabilities

the ability to get links back to your website

brilliant writing skills

patience

Patience
I stress patience because when it comes to SEO you have to learn how to sit back and look at your site, stare at it and find areas that can be enhanced by your SEO practices. Patience would be the key combined with knowing what to look for and what you’re looking at when it comes to making a document or website better – not only and at all for the search engines but mostly for your users.

SEO Writing
The next SEO skill I’d like to stress is writing. Do you, the up-and-coming SEO know how much writing you have to do to make your SEO campaign a success? As we all know, writing informative articles about our products or services and placing links to our important pages within those articles are conducive to a successful SEO campaign. Those articles not only help from an SEO perspective but they also build traffic as more people share them.

And remember people won’t share your articles unless it’s worth their time and the time of the person they’re sharing with.

Getting Links
Oh the big SEO secret – getting links. Aren’t you glad I told you? Now all you need to do is figure out a way to get links back to your website. Here are 3 ways.

Submit your site to free business directories and bulletin boards

Write articles & press releases with links in them to your website (please use proper anchor text)

Ask for links or write awesome content that compel people to link to you

Technical Skills
This is almost self-explanatory but I’ll sum it up for you. At the very least you need to know how to do technical things like writing decent and validating XHTML and performing such tasks as speeding up your website according to Google’s webmaster guidelines.

Speaking of Google’s Webmaster Guidelines, that’s a great place to learn SEO.

Over a year ago I introduced to the owners of a few companies that offer SEO services in Burlington and the Halton area the idea of using social media – not to help in your SEO efforts, but as a lucrative way of raising brand awareness and connection with customers – you know the usual. But in the back of my mind I always believed that although the links on most of our social sites (Facebook, Twitter) are nofollow links, that those said links would still be quite valuable.

Many local SEO’s I spoke with argued that social websites were useless for ‘real businesses’ but I didn’t care nor did I listen. I followed my gut when it told me that although the links are indeed not followed by the search engines (because they are blocked in the link code) the anchor text within those links still substantiate the meaning or definition of the content on the page it is linking to.

I kept that to myself and let the other sift through the noise. Eventually it became clear that to have a strong online social presence would indeed benefit one’s website in search – Google’s Real Time Search Results, Twitter updates and a stronger presence of Facebook Fan pages.

Web design companies in Burlington and the GTA had to change their game up to about 8 years ago when SEO came onto the scene and now SEO companies in Burlington the the GTA need to change their game again. It’s not longer about optimizing a website for the search engines but instead it’s about providing decent content and information, about different aspects of your services to a group of people who are willing to listen – your Facebook, Twitter and other social website followers.

I’ll see you all in the new year and be good!!

While working SEO services in Hamilton over the past year I discovered a lot of hype going around the Internet related to the dismay companies are experiencing with SEO firms that aren’t listening to Webmaster Guidelines. It now seems that with the roll-out of Caffeine combined with the lack of knowledge of local SEOs, Burlington, Oakville and Hamilton SEO service companies are seeing their client sites lose their rankings and have even dropped in PageRank. What is page-rank? Basically, PageRank is the metric that sets Google apart from other search engines.

According to an article from the Search Engine Roundtable, 43% Of SEOs claim traffic has gone down since the Google update:

Some are reporting that the new design is sending fewer referrals and less traffic to their web site. Now, that can be a huge deal for a site that gets a lot of traffic from organic Google search results. Back then, the report came from WebmasterWorld, yes a thread but also the site said they are suffering with the new design. So I decided to see if it is widespread or specific to WebmasterWorld.

There was also a nice video post from Matt Cutts about the May Day Update in case you we’ere aware that there was one.

Burlington SEOs are now happy to be able to announce that website speed is a new ranking factor in Google’s algorithm. Thankfully Google has provided some hints under site speed in the Labs section of Webmaster Tools and a whole page which provides site performance suggestions related to using page speed. I will summarize those site speed performance suggestions here.

Asynchronous Tracking
To set up asynchronous tracking you simply need to replace your current Analytics script with the following:

<script type=”text/javascript”>

var _gaq = _gaq || [];
_gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-XXXXX-X']);
_gaq.push(['_trackPageview']);

(function() {
var ga = document.createElement(‘script’); ga.type = ‘text/javascript’; ga.async = true;
ga.src = (‘https:’ == document.location.protocol ? ‘https://ssl’ : ‘http://www’) + ‘.google-analytics.com/ga.js’;
var s = document.getElementsByTagName(‘script’)[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s);
})();

</script>

Pay special attention to this line in code in the script above and change it to your current property ID. Your current property ID is found in the Analytics code you are now replacing.

_gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-XXXXX-X']);

Make sure to check the status of your script in your Google Analytics account to make sure it is receiving data.

Optimize the order of styles and scripts
Simply put, the browser delays rendering all code after JavaScript has been downloaded, parsed and executed. Therefore Google’s suggestion is to place all you the references to your external CSS files before you load your JavaScript files. For example if a file is being downloaded when a JavaScript file is referenced for download, the JavaScript file is downloaded in parallel with the first file and in essence, will reduce the speed at which the first (possibly smaller) file is downloaded.

Combine external JavaScript
This would be listed in your on-page SEO proposal most likely as: Combine all external JavaScript files into one so as to reduce the number of calls to the server during page load. It’s obvious that this could contribute to page load speeds but remember two things: a. it isn’t always easy or beneficial to combine code from one JavaScript file into another as conflicting issues could arise. Remember putting all your JavaScript code into one file may take some time to work properly too. b. some of your JavaScript code may not ever work if it is combined with other JavaScript files successfully for a myriad of reasons. If that is the case you’ll just have to settle with a separate call to the server for that file. That’s OK though. It’s not the biggest problem but do your best to combine as many JavaScript files as you reasonably can.

Minimize DNS lookups
Straight from Google on this one: “Reducing the number of unique hostnames from which resources are served cuts down on the number of DNS resolutions that the browser has to make, and therefore, RTT delays.” The entire piece of information regarding the reduction of DNS lookups is quite lengthy and technical so I’ll summarize it here: Try your best, your very best to reduce the number of domains/hosts that your files come from OR try to reduce the number of external files you use on your site especially during initial load time.

Combine external CSS
This is straight forward and even slightly intuitive. It’s almost second nature to cut the corner a little bit by placing all your CSS code into one file and is conducive to a faster loading website. Again one file, one call – responses to CSS calls are usually quick and combining your CSS references into one file can only benefit your site with respect to site speed. There generally aren’t any problems related to putting all your CSS code into one stylesheet.

Enable gzip compression in your .htaccess file
Enabling gzip compression in your .htaccess file can substantially reduce the size of the files being sent from the server to your users computers (the browser). By enabling gzip compression within your .htaccess file you’re telling the server to compress (zip) the file before it is sent to the users browser. Compressing the file can make it substantially smaller and thus substantially reduce the load time of your pages.

Simply add the following directive into your .htaccess file.

# compress all text & html:
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml

# Or, compress certain file types by extension:
<Files *.html>
SetOutputFilter DEFLATE
</Files>

Make sure to reload your website in your browser after applying this code to ensure it is working properly. Seriously.

Many have argued that speed would never become a ranking factor and many hoped it wouldn’t but today Google announced once and for all the speed is a ranking factor and why it is so.

Speeding up websites is important — not just to site owners, but to all Internet users. Faster sites create happy users and we’ve seen in our internal studies that when a site responds slowly, visitors spend less time there. But faster sites don’t just improve user experience; recent data shows that improving site speed also reduces operating costs. Like us, our users place a lot of value in speed — that’s why we’ve decided to take site speed into account in our search rankings. We use a variety of sources to determine the speed of a site relative to other sites.

I wrote a complete list of Google tips to speed up your website at WebProWorld.com which is much more detailed than this post.

As we can there is a lot of proof that website speed is important for website owners and for the users of our websites and users of Google’s search service.

What do we do now? There are a few things you can do but the first job you should take care of is determining how long your site to load, which scripts or files are being called and loaded make the neccessary changes to the areas that are causing your site to load slow.

My only question would is how much of a ranking factor is speed going to be? We need to know. If it’s not the heaviest ranking factor we can at least reduce the panic of webmasters worldwide. Let’s see if we’ll hear more about this from Google in the near future.

It’s a plain and simple fact that there are hundreds of in-house SEO workers who could do well with a little reminder of some of their important tasks when it comes to SEO services. Sometimes an SEO will possess outdated or old concepts when it comes to SEO and while their superiors have no clue as how their website’s rankings could substantially improve with a little boost in the form of a back-to-the-basics SEO. SEO working is very time sensitive and unless you’re constantly doing your job your employer is bound to find another one.

If you’re a business owner, and you’ve stumbled across this article you may want to note the following questions and bring your resident SEO in for a meeting tomorrow – again just as a reminder and as an invitation to take a little break from the norm and surf the net to discover new ways of raising your rankings, increasing traffic and getting your brand out there.

Do we have a Google Account?
Since Google is the most used search engine on the planet it’s important to get in good with them and as early as possible. By registering your site with Google Webmaster Tools you are able to customizing your website settings, submit your XML sitemap and also browse various statistics related to your website like search terms your site is being listed for and clicked on. Registering your website with Google Webmaster Tools doesn’t necessarily enhance your rankings in the search engines per say, but it does help Google understand your site more accurately in various ways and that is where the possibility of a ranking or traffic increase can occur.

When was the last time we updated our XML sitemap?
As we know an XML sitemap helps tell the search engines how many and which pages are contained within your website. Many websites have new content added to their website daily, weekly or even monthly. Submitting a new sitemap on a monthly period could end up being a productive practice as you want to make sure the search engines know your content is available.

Was the last time you worked on link-building less than a month ago?
We all know link-building is an vital necessity to building more traffic and increasing your rankings in the search engines. Our competitors are doing it – are they above us in the results? Taking out time to link build at least a few times a month is an important job to remember as doing so keeps our sites busy in the search engines, fresh and new especially if you’re linking to your new content.

Have we discovered new ways of optimizing our client sites? If so are we implementing them?
When it comes to SEO we all know you can’t get enough of it. There’s virtually no end to a good old SEO job. It’s important for an SEO to always strive to keep updated with new products, services, plugins technologies that will enhance their current game-plan. It might be time for your SEO to visit the forums he frequents and see if there’s anything new going on in the land of search. There’s always something new out there and it’s good to encourage your SEO to get out there and surf – do a little research in new ways of handling the job of an SEO.

Have we research and discovered any new ways of increasing click-through rates and conversions?
Are you running an ads campaign with your SEO behind the wheel? Is his work-load too much that he hasn’t time to go in at least once a month and research how your ads are performing? A seasoned SEO knows there it’s always beneficial to tweak your ads. Competitors try new things and succeed and there’s comes a time when you have to as well. Get your SEO back into your ads account, tweak your messages and try for more conversions. That is why you hired your SEO in the first place right?

The moral of the story is give your SEO the time he or she needs to research and perform the mundane tasks of the service. Many SEOs get tied up in taking care of the companies web design services so it’s important to remember that the game of SEO is virtually never ending. In order to maintain traffic and keep bubbling at the top of the search engines you need your SEO to continue to learn, explore, research and enhance his or her skills in the practice.

SEO is of the utmost importance in web design unless you’re a multi-million dollar company that has a multi-million dollar advertising budget. Since that isn’t the case for small to medium sized website owners, SEO will always have a place in a web design strategy.

I’d like to set out some guidelines that you, the business owner should look for when considering hiring an SEO web design firm – in Burlington, Hamilton or the rest of the GTA Ontario.

SEO Reports
One of the very first things an SEO web design firm should provide you with is a rankings report. A rankings report is a document that lists your website rankings in the search engines based on your keywords. You should also receive a rankings report for your current and discovered competitors. With these reports you and your marketing team can determine what if any amount should be applied to the online marketing budget and make a decision as to where they want to stand from a search engine perspective in the near future.

Before you receive your report the firm should have already requested your desired keyword list and enhanced it by adding a new list of related and long-tail keywords you should also consider ranking for. Obtaining new related and long-tail keywords is done through a process sometimes called keyword discovery.

If you’ve come across a company that provides acute web design services and SEO you’ll be in luck to find that you’ll usually also receive from them a rankings report for your current and discovered competitors as well.

If the SEO web design firm you’re speaking with decides to take another route at providing you a quote you might want to get a second opinion from at least another two sources.

After a little discussion with your SEO about your rankings report and some brainstorming with your marketing team your SEO web design firm should already be working on the next very important step.

Website Analysis
To an SEO in charge, after a detailed examination of your rankings report he should be able to see significant reasons why your rankings are what they are – whether high or low. Once the SEO has completed the website analysis they should be able to provide you with a sound strategy, one that makes clear sense to you the business owner, as to how you can begin the project of gaining higher ground in the search results, attract more traffic and increase conversions.

The SEO web design proposal should make no promises as to getting your website ranked #1 in the search engines but if a strong and long term relationship is built between you and the SEO web design firm and if they are true experts at SEO you can expect a measurable increase in traffic and decent boost in search engine rankings for your keywords.

As all web designers, graphic designers, web marketers and SEOs know, the nature of the web is always changing and being up to date with the times, trends and growing technologies is of the utmost importance. This natural pattern so aptly applies to these times when it comes to the web and the growing support and implementation of RDFa, Rich Snippets and Microformats.

I was reminded of this simple fact of web-life while spending some time working with a great web design company in Hamilton, SynergyPro Solutions. I came across a few articles regarding rich snippets and RDFa and at first shunned any future research into the framework. I didn’t even know it was a framework and because I was so busy with other SEO services that were on my plate I wanted to simply ignore the growing popularity of RDFa and it’s necessity when it comes to SEO services. But as usual curiosity got the best of me and after a little research into RDFa & Rich Snipperts, I was compelled to post a simple question at a very popular web business help forum: have you implemented RDFa into your web work. The response was enlightening and proved to me that there are a lot of SEOs who are ahead of the game and keeping up with new technologies and new frameworks – especially if they compliment SEO services.

Now not only have I worked with several web design and SEO firms in the GTA but I’ve recently spoken to a few of the owners of these firms and asked them what their stance is on RDFa. I won’t name any of these firms just yet but I will say to my amazement out of the 4 in the area that I spoke with, not one of them new the RDFa existed. I didn’t press the issue any further but I was able to conclude that the RDFa framework won’t be taking off here in Ontario any time in the future.

Are you an SEO staying ahead of the time?

As posted in my previous article about SEO services and the RDFa working together you can clearly see how Google and Yahoo are taking search results to a new level. The only snag most SEO companies find is that the news of Google and Yahoo showing rich snippets in the search results wasn’t big news. The changes and additions to the search results seemed to have changed slowly and behind the scenes.

My advice: If you are an SEO start digging your head into RDFa and try to get your head around it as quickly as possible. Although there isn’t a flood of information about RDFa to be had on the internet just yet be patience and dig deep because it’s out there – you’ll just have to look for it.

If you offer SEO or web design services in Burlington or the rest of the GTA jump on RDFa as soon as possible. You’ll thank me for compelling you and your clients will surely thank you too in the next 10 years as the RDFa grows and most likely becomes a standard in the world or SEO.

There is not doubt in my mind that you’ve hired an SEO services company in Burlington or anywhere in the GTA that has offered to write content and articles for you. They’ve explained the benefits of article writing and how articles with links back to your website can increase traffic and rankings in the search results but did they mention the fact that there must be a level of quality to those articles? Let me rephrase that question. Are you aware of the fact that general gibberish will not increase your rankings and will not increase traffic? This is why.

People love to read and they love to read about your products and services even more. A lot of people will read up on reviews before they purchase a product or service or they will read articles based on those too.

SEO services related to article and content writing should have a long lasting effect on your readers. As Matt Cutts of Google said, we should be writing useful articles that readers will love and not simply copying bits and pieces of information from Wikipedia or some other website.

When an article is written with your readers in mind they can actually feel the quality of the article. When internet users truly enjoy an article or get value from it that is when they link to it from their websites and blogs. The more people who link to your article the more traffic you get and the higher your pages get in the search engines.

That is the fact.

If you’re SEO company is writing articles for you make sure the following is being taken care of:

a. make sure your articles are being written by qualified individuals
b. make sure you content is not being copied from other websites like Wikipedia or other similar sources
c. make sure the articles you are paying for aren’t spammy. Web users know spam when they see it and will dismiss articles that are obviously written for search and not people

As mentioned in a previous post here at seoCraftsmen I’ve worked with several so-called SEO companies in Burlington and the GTA and have found that the SEO for the CEO can claim to offer SEO and article writing services but in the end I’ve seen their customer’s websites fall by the wayside, lose traffic, lose rankings and are left having to pay out more and more money in an attempt at ranking higher in the search engines.

My advice is to ask your SEO company a lot of questions especially when it comes to article writing. SEO is not talk, SEO is action that leads to a life-time of results. The web community isn’t stupid. They know what they’re reading and whether what their reading is spam or not.
